Ask me about...- We have been learning French form Mr Ford. We did skits to help us learn to say: stand up, sit down, walk and stop. We learned the Bonjour song. - We are practicing our multiplication skills as we develop a "Video Game Truck" business. We made a video to show what we have learned. - We have been learning techniques for writing poems using figurative language techniques. - We did several experiments that helped us to see how air takes up space and that air has pressure. - We have learned about the Council of 500 and how the courts work. We are making a map of Ancient Athens to show the important landmarks of their government. Upcoming...- Please return empty report card envelopes by Friday.
- Swimming starts Monday and goes until Friday. Bring items in extra plastic bag. Backpacks are not going to the pool. - Air Quiz on Tuesday - make sure you know about the properties of air we have been experimenting with. You also need to know how we know that there is oxygen in the air. (it is on the Understanding Air document you used for the 10 properties) They are: - air takes up space - air exerts pressure - air has weight - air can change temperature - hot air expands, cool air contracts Next week we will be continuing our exploration of figurative language, learning about the four forces of flight in science, continuing to multiply and starting to learn about probability, graphing data we collect, and plotting points on a coordinate plane. And of course we will be swimming each morning. Please be on time each day as we will getting on the bus right after attendance. Ask me about...- Today our grade 6s went to Colonel Macleod School and our grade 5s learned how to use the Spheros. - We will be presenting our first pass for our artistic embodiment of The Present on Monday. - In Social Studies, we learned about the pillars of Canadian democracy and about the social structure in the democracy of Ancient Athens. We each have a role, slave, metic, or citizen that were are researching and will share a "Day in their life". We role played an Assembly where citizens voted for Ambassadors. They are Emma and Reid. - In science we have been learning about the 10 properties or air. We are going to be conducting experiments to help us see these principles. In our first experiment, we fought against air and lost. The principles that experiments showed were air has pressure and air takes up space. - In math we are developing our understanding of multiplication. We all are working to discover our best personal strategy for multiplying up to 2-digit by 2-digit numbers. - We are learning to take notes from an informational piece and turn our notes into paragraphs. - We are looking for examples of figurative language in poems and songs and writing poems using various techniques. - In gym we learned new games from Mr. Aaron and are playing floor hockey with Mr. Ford. Upcoming...Finish January journal - Week 1 for Monday
Finish Pillars of Democracy images - for Monday Swimming forms - please return ASAP - they were due Friday Over the next week, we will be continuing to experiment with properties of air in science, learn about the democracy of Ancient Athens in social studies, explore ways to write more interesting paragraphs, investigate techniques for using figurative language when writing, and continue to develop our skills with multiplication. Soon we will all be learning to program the Spheros. Upcoming Dates; Family Dance - Thursday Non-instructional Day - Friday Swimming - January 29- February 2 Our Belfast School website has changed - but the link to this blog is still there - its Ask Me About...- We started reading In Over Their Heads - the sequel to Under their Skin. We met a new character Lida Mae. Eryn and Nick, Jackson and Ava are still in the nature preserve. This book is now in all 4 children's perspective, not just Nick and Eryn's. Jackson keeps on fzzzting out! We wonder if Lida Mae's family planted the notes that told Nick ad Eryn to kill all the robots? - We started our science study of Air and Aerodynamics and watched a few videos to help us think about what we already know about air. We recorded our thinking and will look back at the end of the unit to see what we have learned. - We started to look at the 10 properties of air and create visuals to represent them. - We are learning to take notes from information - this week it was with Understanding Air - We recorded our "douze jours de vacances d'hiver" (12 Days of Winter Break). - We watched The 10 Most Amazing Chemical Reactions and a video about how air caused the Tacoma Narrows bridge to collapse. - We learned 4 new gym games - Duel Ball, Pin Ball, Chaos, Captain's Coming. Mr. Aaron was with us on Tuesday and Thursday and will be teaching us some cooperative games over the next few weeks. - We learned how to model percent with circles, and to write percent as decimals and fractions. - We did some mental multiplication and we are working to learn our own successful strategy for multiplying different numbers. - We are starting to learn about different governments and democracy. We compared three different government scenarios, using pluses and minuses and explained our first choice. Upcoming...Dates:
- Grade 6 Colonel Macleod forms - due Wed. Jan. 17 - Grade 6 visit to Colonel Macleod School - Fri. Jan. 19 - Swimming forms due Fri. Jan. 19 - Book Orders are due next Friday - Swimming -Mon. Jan. 29 to Fri. Feb. 2 We will continue to explore the properties of air through several experiments in science. We will continue our study of democracy through an exploration of the people of Ancient Athens - the different types of citizens and their roles, in Social Studies. Our math focus continues to be thinking about proportional reasoning which includes comparing fractions, decimals, and percent. We are also working on the computation skills of multiplication. Mr. Symington is looking for large colourful objects (solid colours) such as fabric, paper lanterns, pool noodles, textured items etc that would look fun and colourful on stage for the K-2 musical. If you have any of these items please bring them to him on the stage. |
