Ask me about... to- we learned a new math game - Digit Place - we started to make the props for our Sky Science presentations - we were very close to the actual answer for the Penny Pyramid problem. We shared how we worked on the problem and learned a LOT of math from each other!!!! - we continued to learn about how Indigenous people connect with the land. We watched a webinar by Taylor Tabobondung, a First Nation Conservation Steward with the Turtle Island Conservation Program at the Toronto Zoo. He discussed the importance of First Nation communities’ connections to the land and the importance of conservation work in keeping the land available for future generations to use and enjoy. The TIC program focuses on connecting First Nation ways of knowing together with Ecology to inform habitat conservation efforts. Taylor shared a Creation story, "The Turtle With The Sun Under It's Chin". The webinar is posted on YouTube here. - we started to talk about the genre of science fiction. We learned that science fiction stories are based upon plausible science. We watched the trailers for Interstellar and The Martian to help us think about possible reasons for why we might have to/want to leave Earth. - we wrote a newspaper article as a baseline assessment. We are going to use these articles to identify what we already know how to do and as a basis for improving our functional writing. - our book orders arrived!! Upcoming ....- we go to Outdoor School on Tuesday!
Ask me about ...- we voted in the Student Vote. Our results will be made public on Tuesday, October 17, after the results are released for the Municipal Elections in Alberta. - we started thinking about how we would create a sky science lab/experiment where we could share our learning. Over the weekend we are thinking about gathering materials. - we were trying to find out how many pennies there are in the Penny Pyramid. Our estimates are:
- we are learning basketball in gym - we completed our finishing touches on our Cultural Beliefs - the boilers weren't working so well on Thursday morning and it was very hot. We stayed outside for gym - we learned that John Noa didn't like that Letta's parents went outside of Ark in our novel The List. We have been thinking about how this book takes some ideas of things that have happened in history and is telling us about what could happen in the future. - we talked about going to Outdoor School and what we need to bring. We got to tell 3 people that we wanted to be in the same group with. - rehearsals continue - with different roles meeting at different times. Upcoming...- we will continue to work on creating our Sky Science labs/experiments that demonstrate how objects in the sky move - we will be revisiting the techniques for writing a strong compare/contrast paragraph (that some students learned last year) and then use our research to compare and contrast different First Nations groups in a written paragraph - we will continue to work on place values skills - reading and writing large numbers as well as develop our skills with multiplication - Dates to remember... Monday - Professional Day - no school
November 7 - Fort Calgary field trip Ask Me About ...- Our "If I Were In Charge of the World" presentations allowed us to see each other's creative ideas for how to present a clear and interesting message, and to think about what techniques we might use in the future. - We explored how we might use the movement of objects in the sky to help us measure time - hours, days, weeks, months and years - instead of using a clock. - We revisited phases of the moon - focusing on the pattern of the 8 phases and refining our understanding of the vocabulary: WANING, WAXING, CRESCENT and GIBBOUS - We started to explore how different Canadian Indegenous people lived before European Contact. We focused on developing questions around how their environment influenced their lives. - We learned about the responsibilities of a local government and the roles and responsibilities of the Mayor, Councillors, and School Trustees. - We began to explore the platforms of the candidates running in Ward 10 (the Ward that Belfast School is in) so that we will be prepared for the Student Vote next week. - We reviewed math concepts of place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and thought about areas where we need continued practice. - We continued to learn about Transformational Geometry - Transformations, Reflections and soe of us plotted points on a coordinate grid. - We completed our Budding Artist works! Upcoming...- We will continue to explore stories of First Nations connections to their environment - We will learn and teach each other strategies for finding True North without a compass, and building a human sundial. - We will explore ROTATIONS (Transformational Geometry) - We will continue to explore group math tasks to refine and extend our number sense. Dates to Remember... - Who can vote? and Why I Should Vote (on Municipal Elections document in your Social Studies folder in Google Drive) - due Wednesday
