Ask me about..- We learned how linear, grid, and circle models show fractions, decimals, and percents. We know that percent is something out of one hundred. - We finished our Star Log - Part 1 and Part 2 assignments - We baked bannock - a chemistry activity! - We finished reading Under Their Skin - We reflected on our Social Studies First Nations Connections to the Land diorama and writing Upcoming...- We will continue to explore fractions, decimals, percents, and ratios in math. We will also revisit multiplication of to digit numbers and "Sharpen the Saw" with our addition and subtraction of decimals.
- We will begin to learn about different forms of democracy in Social Studies - starting with Ancient Greece as a model for subsequent democracies. - We will be starting Air and Aerodynamics in Science and continuing with a bit of chemistry, too. - We will be writing persuasive pieces and continuing to work on developing our ideas in paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusions. Ask Me About...- We did an amazing job of learning our new lines for the musical in just one day! - We made a Optical Illusion art project with our buddies. We also read with our buddies this week. - We are finished Part 1 of our Star logs! Part 2 is due Wednesday next week. - We started a "Twelve Days of Winter Break, French project. It will be due at the end of the first week back. - We started our Meter of Candy math projects. We are learning to connect what we know about fractions to percents and decimals. - Some of us started some computer coding using Code.org. We will continue learning to code so that later in the year we can build a game using Scratch. Upcoming...- bring a novel to read for our Quiet Reading next week
- Star Log Part 2 due Wednesday - Thursday is Belfasty Day and Pajama Day and a 1/2 day and the last day before Winter Break. - We shared our social studies museum displays with Room 11. We compared how our First Nations Cultural Group met their needs with another group who lived in a different geographic area. An understanding that we developed was that although we all have the same basic needs for survival, community organization, and belonging, the different First Nations Cultural Groups met their needs differently based upon the specific geography of the environment in which they lived. - Several of us are finished the written component, a few students are still working to finish. - We learned a number of techniques for using iMovie (video editing software) to use when creating our Star Log as a culminating project for our Sky Science unit. Part 1 of this Star Log where students record themselves explaining what their new location is like will be completed this week. - Part 2 of our Star Log will be to narrate a slide show of all of the celestial objects that their ship recorded along the journey. Students will be able to share their understanding of objects that reflect and emit light as well as their understanding of our Solar System and beyond. Students will be completing this next week. - On Chemistry Thursday, we continued experiments about chemical vs physical reactions, hypothesizing about whether a chemical or physical reaction would occur and testing our theories. - We continued to explore equivalent fractions and looked at our Submarine Sandwich again, this time comparing our results for the different amounts of submarine sandwich each group ate, - next week in math, we will be exploring fractions, percents, and decimals through a problem called "A Meter of Candy" - In the novel, Under their Skin, Ava and Jackson were shown a movie from the past where two doctors explained that they had created a program to stop humans from becoming extinct. They programmed robots to be adults in a society where children were developed from frozen embryos. As the children grew up, and started their own human families, the robots would be gradually phased out and a new and improved human society would flourish, improving on human's previous mistakes. - We continued our rehearsals for our upcoming musical, Aesop's Musical Foibles which we will be sharing with you on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Upcoming....IT'S MUSICAL WEEK!
MONDAY
Friday - Star Log - Part 1 due Ask me about...- Most of us are finished our social museum displays - those who need more time are able to work at home and have them ready for Tuesday. - We started the written component that will help to explain how each cultural group met their needs through what was in their nearby environment. We will finish this next week. - We looked at exemplars of the museum display writing. Students were quick to identify what would be Basic, Good, and Excellent. Students are currently writing paragraphs with topic/introductory sentences, supporting details and conclusions for each of the three needs. We will then be writing introductory and concluding paragraphs and use transitions to tie everything together. - We started a Star Log as a culminating project for our Sky Science unit. Part 1 of this Star Log has students are deciding on a reason that we might need to leave Earth, where they will go and recording themselves explaining what their their new location is like when they arrive. - Part 2 of our Star Log will be to narrate a slide show of all of the celestial objects that their ship recorded along the journey. Students will be able to share their understanding of objects that reflect and emit light as well as their understanding of our Solar System and beyond. - On Chemistry Thursday, we learned about what indicates a chemical reaction and conducted an experiment. We hypothesized about whether a chemical or physical reaction would occur. - We observed our salt and vinegar crystals again, and thought about what would be a fair test. - We have been learning about fractions - they need to be equal pieces, even if the pieces look different. - We started to think about equivalent fractions which will help us to compare the different amounts of submarine sandwich each group got for lunch in Submarine Sandwich problem. - In the novel, Under their Skin, we were shocked to find out that Ava and Jackson were robots and that everyone over the age of 12 is a robot. We are wondering, will Eryn and Nick become robots when they turn 12? We are also wondering if the test they need to take will be connected to what happens when they turn 12? - We posted our Outdoor School newspaper articles in IRIS and reflected upon what we improved and what we still need to work on. - We started our whole school rehearsals for our upcoming musical, Aesop's Musical Foibles. Upcoming...- Tuesday - First Nations dioramas must be finished.
- Thursday - Chemistry Thursday - we will be conducting another physical vs chemical reaction experiment. - Musical rehearsals will be every afternoon next week. |
